Mbali is a play that looks at the issues of mental ill health. It tells the tale of Mbali; the name means flower in the isiZulu language; a young female elephant who witnesses the slaughter of her family by poachers. She has lost her family, her guide and her security. She is traumatised and lost.
The play follows Mbali as she slips into depression, loses interest in eating and life. She faces dangers, demons and nightmares. She cannot see any reason to keep on living until she meets the Oxpecker, called Tsande, a friend, guide and counsellor who shows her that her life is worth saving and survival and recovery is in her hands.
